KampDatabase

The KampDatabase is a collection of ASCII files compiled by KampData designed to be imported and used by DynamicZip.

Since 1995 we have relied on the ZIPsales Database to provide the required data. As of build 74 we have added the option to use the Zip2Tax Database. However both of these databases are built on the framework of ZIP's and city names provided by the USPS. The USPS data is rather messy and includes multiple spellings for the same place. In an effort to clean up and standardize this data in the past we used naming rules. However, the best solution is to use the USPS preferred city names wherever possible. To accommodate this, we now purchase redistributable USPS data and groom the data with software and by hand. The result is good clean data that includes alternate spellings which DynamicZip resolves back to the USPS Preferred City Names.

Monthly Updates

The KampDatabase files ideally should be downloaded each month from the KampData website. The changes in the KampData files are mostly related to changes in ZIP Codes. We also add new FIPS Codes for new cities and/or alternate spelling/abbreviations of existing cities. As a practical matter, these changes probably affect a very small percentage of tax locations. When you see warnings in the DynamicZip rate and boundary import report regarding address issues such as “unable to identify FIPS code”, a fresh copy of the KampDatabase will probably resolve those issues.
