What are Naming Rules?

Build 74 and later

Naming Rules are no longer used starting with Build 74. The FipsCodes.txt import file is now used to manage and control place names.

Prior to Build 74

DynamicZip naming rules are used to control and standardize the county and city names in the DZ Zip Address Table. For instance, a naming rule might be used to abbreviate Saint (as in Saint Louis) to St (as opposed to having both St Louis and Saint Louis in the address table). The use of naming rules both prevents inconsistencies (which makes using lookup windows easier) and helps reduce the chance of tax schedule descriptions becoming truncated (Tax schedule descriptions usually contain the state, city name and county name, but can only be 30 characters long).

From the DZ FIPS Codes window you can create your own set of naming rules.

Open the DZ FIPS Codes window and navigate DynamicZip»Naming Rules from the menu to open up the DZ Naming Rules window. Using the DZ Naming Rules window you can:

  • Click on the printer icon to print a report of your current naming rules.
  • Use the browse buttons on to pull up each of your naming rules.
  • Delete or modify naming rules.
  • Create new rules.

DynamicZip has default naming rules already in place when it is installed. However, you can modify the naming rules to best suit your preferences.

For example: To change all occurrences of Ft to FORT

  1. Browse through the existing rules until you find the default rule for changing FORT to Ft.
  2. Delete the FORT to Ft rule.
  3. Set the When Name field to “contains”.
  4. Type Ft into the Starting Value field.
  5. Set the Type of Change field to “replace with”.
  6. Type FORT into the Ending Value.
  7. Press the Save button.
  8. From the DZ Naming Rules window navigate to DynamicZip»Apply Rules to Geocode Names.
  9. Click the Report button for a preview or the Update button to run the process.
  10. A window will popup asking “This process will generate a report of Geocode names that do not comply with the naming rules. Do you want a report only, or do you want the update to occur?” For a preview of the changes press the Report button. If you would like to apply the rules press the Update button.
  11. Select the checkbox for Use Naming Rules for New Cities & Counties in the DynamicZip Setup window to enable the use of Naming Rules.

NOTE: Once a city or county name is stored in the geocode table it can only be modified if you manually change it using the DZ Geocodes window or the Apply Rules to Geocode Names process(Step 8 above.).
